Terms Governing Meeting Title Inflation
This agreement governs the naming of coordination events in organizations where no title governance exists.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF MEETING TITLE INFLATION
Effective upon the second use of a formal title for a routine coordination event Jurisdiction: Any organization with calendar access and no title policy
Article I: Definitions
1.1 Meeting Title Inflation refers to the practice of assigning governance-adjacent names to coordination events whose operational content is routine. Examples include, but are not limited to: "Alignment Session," "Strategic Sync," "Cross-Functional Touch Base Review," and "Ongoing Integration Dialogue" applied to a weekly fifteen-minute status call.
1.2 Originating Party refers to the individual who first named a routine coordination event using formal language. The Originating Party is not required to have been aware they were doing so.
1.3 Precedent Event refers to any calendar entry whose title has been accepted without objection for two or more consecutive occurrences.
Article II: Terms of Use
2.1 By creating a calendar event with a title of three or more words, the Originating Party agrees that the title may be repeated in perpetuity on the same recurring series.
2.2 Once an event qualifies as a Precedent Event, the title may not be simplified without written or verbal acknowledgment from at least two attendees that the simplification is intentional and not a transcription error.
2.3 The Originating Party may not later claim the title was provisional. A title used twice is not provisional. A title used twice is the title.
Article III: Downstream Obligations
3.1 Any attendee who uses the meeting's formal name when referring to it in another context has accepted the title into their professional vocabulary. They may not subsequently describe the meeting as "just a check-in."
3.2 Meeting title inflation first adds one extra decision to a moment that previously required none. Other people begin anticipating that decision and quietly adjust their own behavior. The Originating Party is not liable for these adjustments.
3.3 Eventually the ordinary task feels improperly performed unless meeting title inflation happens first. This is a known outcome. Acceptance of these terms constitutes awareness of it.
Article IV: Modification and Termination
4.1 A meeting title may be changed under the following conditions only: the meeting is cancelled and a new series created, or the title change is described in the invite update as a "title correction" rather than a "simplification."
4.2 No party may unilaterally refer to the event by a shorter name and expect the shorter name to propagate.
4.3 These terms do not expire. A meeting series that has been dormant for less than eighteen months retains its title upon resumption.
By attending the meeting, all parties accept these terms, whether or not they have read them.
