Terms Governing Network Payment Pause
A weak signal at the point of sale has produced a small public waiting ceremony that neither party has the option to skip.
These terms govern transactions in which a digital payment has been initiated but confirmation has not yet arrived due to a weak or interrupted network signal, resulting in a public waiting period at the point of sale with a queue behind it.
By initiating the payment, the payer accepts the following conditions.
The network payment pause is defined as the interval between initiating a digital payment and the arrival of audible or visual confirmation on the merchant's device, during which both parties remain at the counter, the payer's phone is held at an angle visible to the merchant, and no conversation occurs. The payment is faster than cash. The pause is not.
Network payment pause adds one extra confirmation check. The check is structural. The payer's app shows success. The merchant's device has not yet confirmed. The social contract of the transaction requires that both parties agree the payment occurred. This agreement cannot be declared unilaterally by the payer. The merchant's screen must participate.
Both parties start waiting for visible proof. A queue develops behind the waiting parties. The queue is not caused by the payer. It is caused by the network. The network is not present at the counter in any way that can be addressed, managed, or apologized to. The queue is therefore an externality with no responsible party and no escalation path.
Under the governing rule, network payment pause becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. A merchant who has experienced ten network pauses in a week has optimized their demeanor for the pause. The payer who has stood through ten pauses in a week has optimized their posture. The optimization is competent and changes nothing about the wait.
A fast payment develops a ceremony around certainty that the infrastructure was supposed to have eliminated. These terms are effective at the moment of first network drop and remain in force until confirmation arrives.
