Terms Governing Order Note Overthinking
Once order note overthinking prevents one awkward moment, it must remain in force for the rest of the routine.

What This Notice Covers
This notice classifies the behaviors associated with the optional note field in food delivery applications. The field is labeled optional. The note is, by the terms of this classification, not treated as optional.
The note is treated as required in the sense that its absence produces a brief but identifiable discomfort, and its presence produces a brief but identifiable relief, and neither response is proportional to the operational significance of the field.
Classification of Observed Note Types
Type A: Allergy or substitution note. Operationally justified. Included without significant deliberation. Not the subject of this classification.
Type B: Pleasantry with no operational content. Example: "Thank you so much!" Included after a median deliberation time of forty-five to ninety seconds. The deliberation concerns whether the note sounds sincere or performative. No evidence exists that this distinction is legible to the recipient.
Type C: Redundant instruction already covered by the order. Example: "No onions please" when no onions were already selected via the customization interface. Included because the customization interface felt insufficient. Duration of deliberation: one to three minutes.
Type D: Apology for a preference. Example: "Sorry for the fussy order!" Included to manage the imagined emotional response of an unseen preparer to a customization that is within the system's designed parameters. Duration of deliberation: two to four minutes.
The Governing Contradiction
The note field is optional. The note is treated as required. The distinction has collapsed, and the collapse is not causing measurable problems, so it is not being addressed.
The note is read by approximately some fraction of recipients in approximately some fraction of cases. This estimate is not tighter because no data is available. The note is written with the assumption that it will be read carefully.
Terms
Order note overthinking will continue under these terms until the note field is removed or until the overthinking produces a recoverable error, whichever comes first. Neither is expected imminently.
