TERMS GOVERNING PUBLIC SNEEZE APOLOGY

By sneezing in a public or shared indoor space, the sneezing party (hereafter "the subject") agrees to the following terms, which are not written anywhere and apply regardless of whether the subject has reviewed them.

  1. ACKNOWLEDGMENT. The subject acknowledges that a sneeze occurred. This acknowledgment must be verbal. A silent sneeze followed by no acknowledgment constitutes a breach of current etiquette, regardless of the fact that silent sneezes followed by no acknowledgment constituted standard practice until approximately 2020.

  2. APOLOGY. The subject issues an apology. The apology must be proportionate to the current era rather than the medical reality of the sneeze. The medical reality of the sneeze is that it is an involuntary respiratory event with a 0% documented transmission rate for the ailment that generated the revised etiquette. The current era requires more than the medical reality would suggest.

  3. NEARBY RESPONSE. Nearby parties acknowledge the apology. This acknowledgment causes one small physical adjustment in nearby parties, as the act of noticing and responding to a sneeze reactivates a period of heightened awareness that officially ended. Nearby people begin mirroring the adjustment. The room develops etiquette nobody has formally announced.

  4. REPETITION. If the subject sneezes a second time within three minutes, terms restart from Section 1 with increased apology requirements under the standard acceleration clause.

The governing contradiction: the activity is ordinary again. Public indoor life has resumed. Sneezing is a human biological function that occurred in public spaces throughout recorded history and required no specialized terms. The body still treats sneezing in public as requiring active management. This is not irrational. It is a residue of a period during which sneezing in public was, in fact, a managed event.

The sympathy in these terms is genuine. The extra apology is a small cost for a social contract that navigated something difficult. The terms will loosen. They already are.
