Terms Governing QR Code Distance Dance
A payment method faster than cash has introduced a physical calibration ritual around certainty.
Article 1: Definitions
"QR Code Distance Dance" refers to the sequence of small forward and backward movements performed by a person holding a mobile device in the presence of a merchant QR code, for the purpose of achieving camera recognition of the code at a distance that was incorrectly estimated on the first attempt.
"Recognition" means a successful scan confirmed by an audible tone, a visible frame around the code on screen, or automatic navigation to a payment screen. Recognition is the end of the Dance.
Article 2: Applicability
These terms apply to every instance of the Dance from the moment the phone is raised toward the code until Recognition is achieved or the phone is lowered and an alternate payment method is proposed.
Article 3: The Distance Problem
Someone moves a phone closer and farther from a QR code until the camera finally recognizes it. The payment is faster than cash while certainty arrives through extra checks. This is the governing paradox. QR code distance dance adds one extra confirmation check. Both parties start waiting for visible proof. A fast payment develops a ceremony around certainty.
Article 4: Acceptable Distances
No standard distance has been established. The correct distance is determined empirically, in real time, in the presence of the other party, using a method that is visually indistinguishable from indecision.
Article 5: The Other Party
Under these terms, the other party may hold position, offer to enlarge the QR code display, or step slightly aside. No other party obligation is established. Verbal reassurance ("it works, just try again") is permitted but not binding.
Article 6: Procedure
Under the governing rule, QR code distance dance becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. Recognition is eventually achieved. Payment posts. The ceremony concludes.
Article 7: Liability
Neither party is liable for the time elapsed during the Dance. No refund applies. The receipt is available on request.
