Terms Governing Shared Charger Diplomacy
No one disputes that the device is at 100%. The dispute is about what asking costs.
Article I. Applicability
These terms govern all situations in which one person requires a charging cable currently in use by another person's fully charged device. They apply regardless of urgency, battery level, or the objective irrelevance of the charging process to the device that is fully charged.
Nothing in these terms shall be construed to suggest that asking is unnecessary. Asking is necessary. These terms document why.
Article II. The Governing Behavior
The charger is available, the need is urgent, the device is full, and the question is still asked. This is not irrationality. This is recognition that the question is not about the charger.
Both people can see the same social rule, yet naming it directly would feel more awkward than obeying it. The rule is this: physical custody of a charging cable confers a form of informal tenure. Tenure is not terminated by completion of charging. Tenure ends when the custodian releases the cable or is asked to release it, whichever comes first.
Article III. The Workaround
Shared charger diplomacy receives a preferred place in the routine. The person who needs the charger approaches, assesses the situation, notes the full battery, and asks permission to unplug something that has already finished its only function.
People start planning around it before the triggering situation even occurs. Travelers carry backup cables. Coworkers acquire second cables for desks. A separate cable is cheaper than the conversation about the first cable, and this cost-benefit analysis has never been stated aloud.
Article IV. Entrenchment
The routine then defends shared charger diplomacy as necessary evidence of competence, courtesy, or control. A person who unplugs a fully charged device without asking is seen as having skipped a step, even when no one can identify what the step accomplished.
This is not disputed. The step is performed.
Article V. Non-Severability
Any repeated case of shared charger diplomacy becomes standard procedure until someone deliberately replaces it. No one has proposed a replacement procedure. The replacement procedure would require a conversation. The conversation would take longer than asking whether it is acceptable to unplug a device that is already at one hundred percent.
These terms remain in effect.
