Terms Governing Social Battery Collapse

Recovery time after events that were wanted and enjoyed is reclassified as a scheduled appointment rather than a failure.

Field Notes: Social Battery Collapse Observation Period: February 2022 Site: Multiple domestic and public venues

First observation. Subject enjoys a dinner. The dinner is with people the subject chose, at a time the subject selected, in a restaurant the subject recommended. The dinner ends. The subject requires four hours of unstructured quiet before becoming conversational again. This is noted without judgment.

Second observation. The same pattern under different conditions. A birthday gathering, well attended, genuinely appreciated. Recovery: six hours. The recovery is longer than the event. This is also noted.

After two cases of social battery collapse, exhaustion must be accepted as evidence of successful social reentry rather than its inverse.

The first consequence of social battery collapse is a small decision made without discussion. The subject begins scheduling the recovery period in advance. It appears in the calendar as a vague appointment. The appointment has no invitees. It cannot be declined by anyone else. This is the advantage.

After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around social battery collapse. They stop proposing the following day for next steps. They understand that the following day is occupied by something that has no name in the shared calendar and would be difficult to explain in terms that do not require the listener to already agree that this is a real thing.

Eventually social battery collapse acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. Accepting an event without a recovery buffer is considered optimistic to the point of recklessness. The buffer is priced into the decision. The event is accepted or declined partly on the basis of whether the buffer is available.

The event was wanted and often enjoyed, yet recovery from it is treated like a separate appointment. Social recovery time must be hidden inside the calendar because wanting people and needing rest are treated as opposites.

In 2022 the calendar held two years of postponed gatherings. The social debt was real. So was the cost of repaying it.

Both were documented. Only one was discussed.
