The Lit Button Has Been Pressed for Emphasis

The elevator button is already lit. Someone has pressed it again. The light has not changed because the light was already on. The elevator is coming at the same speed as before.

FROM: Person arriving at elevator bank, 2:34pm TO: The elevator RE: Status and expediting options

The button is already lit. I understand this. I am pressing it again.

I recognize that the elevator does not have a mechanism for interpreting urgency from repeated button presses. I am aware that the signal sent by a second press is identical to the signal sent by the first, and that the first press has already been received and is being acted upon. I am pressing it again because being at the elevator requires something to press, and the button is the only available interface.

RESPONSE FROM: The elevator button

The button was pressed at 2:33:47pm. The signal was received. The elevator was dispatched. At 2:34:02pm, the button was pressed again. The signal was received again. The same elevator was already dispatched. Its speed has not changed. Its estimated arrival remains forty-five seconds from the time of the first press.

The button registered both presses accurately. Both were honored in the only way buttons can honor a press, which is to register it. One press was necessary. The other produced the same outcome for no additional reason.

FURTHER CORRESPONDENCE:

FROM: Person at elevator bank, 2:34:09pm The button has now been pressed four times. This is not impatience. I am simply maintaining contact with the situation.

FROM: The elevator button Four presses received. Elevator still dispatched. Speed unchanged. The lobby floor indicator shows the car at floor three. It was at floor three on the first press.

FROM: Person at elevator bank, 2:34:21pm The doors have opened. I am entering. I will press the floor button once.

FROM: The elevator button The floor button has been pressed three times. This is noted. All three are registered as one request. The elevator is going to that floor.

We are in motion.
