The Matter of Banana Timing

The bananas were purchased on Monday at the correct level of firmness. They were ideal on Wednesday. It is now Friday. The bananas have opinions.

3 MIN READfood rituals

The bananas were bought on Monday.

Monday bananas are always a reasonable decision. The fruit section has them in various states of readiness, and green-to-yellow is the responsible choice: they will arrive at peak ripeness in two or three days, which is the future when they will be wanted.

Monday's purchase estimated a Wednesday banana moment.

The Window

Tuesday: too firm. Still correct to wait. Wednesday morning: the window had opened. Perfect ripeness, good texture, ideal eating conditions. Nobody ate them Wednesday morning.

Wednesday was a busy day.

Wednesday evening: the window remained open but dinner was substantial and a banana seemed excessive.

Thursday: the window was still technically accessible at the edges but the soft spots on the larger banana suggested it was aware the window was closing.

Friday morning: the window has closed. The bananas have transitioned.

The State

The bananas are still good. They are sweet, soft, and suitable for consumption. They are not, however, the bananas that were purchased on Monday. Those bananas existed for approximately thirty-six hours and were not encountered during that period.

The current bananas are banana bread bananas. They are better than being wasted. They are also the consequence of a thirty-six-hour oversight.

The Next Purchase

New bananas will be purchased next Monday. The same reasoning will apply. The same window will open Wednesday. The window will be better attended this time.

This is also what was said last Monday.
