The package does not require a signature. It never has. It will not require one today. The delivery record will show: delivered. The door was not answered. The package was left.
None of this information is available at the moment of the sprint.
The Information Gap
The notification does not specify whether the delivery requires interaction. This would be a useful field. It does not exist. The notification contains the carrier name, a tracking number that was already known, and the word "now," which is doing significant work.
The phone does not distinguish between a package that requires a signature and one that does not. The person holding the phone cannot make this determination either, not from the couch, not from the desk, not from any location that is not the door. The sprint is therefore rational given the available information, which is very little.
The Record
Three packages arrived this month. None required a signature. All three produced a sprint. The sprint produced nothing except a slightly earlier awareness of the package's existence, typically by four to six minutes.
The package would have been retrieved during the next ordinary trip downstairs. The next ordinary trip downstairs occurs, on average, within forty minutes. The sprint compressed this to under two minutes. The compression delivered no material benefit.
This outcome has been observed enough times to qualify as a pattern. The pattern has not produced a change in behavior. The sprint continues.
The Absurd Rule
The rule that governs delivery notification sprint is not written anywhere. It cannot be. The rule is: when the notification says "now," the body interprets this as a window that may close, even though no such window exists, even though the package will remain at the door for hours, even though the carrier has already left.
Now means now. The body does not know that the carrier has no further use for the door.
The Contradiction
The service promises convenience. The promise is structurally accurate. The package arrives without a trip to the store, without waiting in a line, without carrying anything through a parking lot. The convenience is substantial and real.
The notification that announces the convenience produces the least convenient moment of the afternoon. The person sprints to receive a box they would have found anyway, slightly later, while doing something else. The something else was more valuable than the four minutes saved. The notification did not offer this comparison.
There is no revision planned. The next notification will arrive. The sprint will follow.
