The Matter of Tool Credit Footnote
A disclosure note written and then deleted because nobody else includes one.
She added the footnote on a Tuesday. It read: Draft assisted with AI tool. Fourteen words. She looked at it for a moment, then deleted it.
Nobody else was doing it. That was the reason, stated plainly. She had checked. The documents circulating in the team contained no such notes. The reports did not disclose their drafting tools. The acknowledgment section thanked the usual people. No footnote.
The observation is this. Someone considers disclosing AI help in a document and then removes the note because nobody else does it. The help was genuine. The document was better for it. The disclosure was accurate. It was removed anyway.
The contradiction is precise. The help is useful enough to use and awkward enough to disguise. These two facts coexist without resolution. Using the tool is ordinary. Mentioning the tool is unusual.
Under the governing rule, tool credit footnote becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. The first removal was a judgment call. The second was a habit forming. By the third document, the private manual check had been added to the workflow: draft the document, use the tool, verify the output, remove any trace of the process.

This is how a practice spreads. Not by decision. By the absence of a decision that nobody makes because everyone is waiting to see what everyone else does.
