The Matter of Workday Room Lighting Forensic Analysis: Sequence of Events

Preliminary Note

The room in question is a bedroom, a home office, a combined bedroom and home office, or a corner of a living room that has been designated as the work area through the placement of a desk and a ring light. The boundaries of the work area are informal. The lighting protocol is not.

Sequence

Someone changes room lighting for a meeting. The meeting requires a certain brightness, a certain angle, and the absence of background chaos. The lighting is adjusted. The meeting occurs.

The meeting ends.

The lighting is not changed back.

Stage One

The reversion to non-meeting lighting is skipped once because another meeting is scheduled shortly after. This is reasonable. The lighting is already set. There is no reason to change it.

The day ends. The lighting is still meeting-appropriate.

Stage Two

A small inconvenience, changing the lighting back and then setting it up again the next morning, leads someone to adopt workday room lighting as the default state during work hours. The work hours are approximately the hours during which the person is in the room. The room is also where they sleep.

Stage Three

After enough repetitions, the household protects workday room lighting from evidence that it is no longer useful. The evidence would be that the lighting could simply remain at one setting. The protection is that changing it back would create a workflow step.

The Governing Rule

Every boundary between home and work requires a ritual, and rituals require maintenance. Workday room lighting is not the lighting preferred for living. It is the lighting preferred for appearing to be at work in a room that is not a workplace.

The Contradiction

The home setup is meant to simplify work, but every boundary requires another ritual. The ritual is the boundary.
