The Office Observes Doorway Blocking

The door handles approximately forty people per hour during morning entry.

Most of these people pass through the doorway and continue in one direction, maintaining the flow that the doorway is designed to support. Approximately three of the forty stop just inside the entrance, for reasons that are individually valid, and briefly change the doorway's function from a transit zone to an obstacle zone.

The Mechanism

The doorway creates a transition moment. Outside is one context: weather, city, mobile networks, personal state. Inside is a different context: building, purpose, immediate next steps. The transition moment sometimes produces the natural response of a pause to update.

The pause is appropriate. The location is not.

The person who stops just inside the door has resolved the transition for themselves. The door behind them continues to function as an entrance. People behind them have not yet resolved the same transition. They are arriving with committed momentum. The stopped person is, from their perspective, not in anyone's way because they are inside the building. From the perspective of the arriving people, they are precisely in the way.

The Solution

The solution is two steps to the left, or the right, or any direction except directly in the path of the door's functional zone. This is approximately the same amount of movement as stopping where they stopped, but it distributes the pause into the non-transiting area.

The two steps are not taken because the person has stopped thinking about the door. They passed through it. It is behind them. The door is no longer part of their spatial model.

The Resolution

Person A moved after eleven seconds. The compression resolved. The morning continued.

The same configuration occurred at 9:19am, 9:23am, and 9:31am with different people. Each resolved in approximately the same time. The door continues to function. The pause inside the entrance continues to occur. Both are adaptations. Both are accepted.
