The Office Observes Perfect Toast Timing

The toast has been in for ninety seconds. For eighty-five of those seconds, it was not important. It is now important. The next fifteen seconds will determine breakfast.

The bread went into the toaster at 8:03am.

The toaster operates on a mechanism that has been calibrated, in theory, to the correct level for this household's preferences. The setting was established during an early period of toaster ownership and has not been revisited.

At 8:04am, the person who made the toast was in a different room, doing a different thing.

The Final Phase

At 8:04:50am, the smell of toast crossed the threshold from background to foreground. This happened approximately fifteen seconds before the toast would reach optimal condition. The smell communicated: the window is opening.

The person returned to the kitchen.

The Window

The window for perfect toast is approximately twenty seconds. During these twenty seconds, the toast is at the correct temperature, the correct color, and the correct crispness. Outside this window, in either direction, the toast is: pale (before) or dark (after). Neither pale nor dark is ruinous. Neither is perfect.

The person was now watching the toaster during the window. This is the only period during the entire toast cycle when watching is meaningful. The eighty-five preceding seconds required no watching. The twenty seconds of the window require full attention.

The Assessment

The toast ejected at 8:05:04am. It was assessed. The color was between acceptable and ideal. The crispness was correct on three-quarters of the surface. One corner was slightly less done.

The toast was eaten. It was fine. The assessment was completed within the window. The window closed. Breakfast proceeded.

The toaster setting was not adjusted. The next slice will go through the same cycle. The window will be available again tomorrow.
