The Relative Video Tutorial Exception
The tutorial was recorded by pointing one phone at another phone. The audio is the ambient sound of a kitchen.
The video arrived at 9:47 on a Tuesday.
I.
The subject's father had recorded the tutorial himself. The method was to open the app he wished to explain, then hold his personal phone in front of the screen of the laptop showing the app, and begin narrating. The narration was clear. The video quality was not. The phone capturing the tutorial was angled slightly upward, which meant the top third of the screen was legible and the bottom third, where the buttons lived, was caught in light from the kitchen window.
The tutorial was two minutes and forty-three seconds long. The subject could hear a pressure cooker in the background.
II.
The tutorial explained how to use a government portal. The portal handled something important. The tutorial was sent because the subject had mentioned, six weeks ago, that this thing might eventually be necessary.
Six weeks was the processing time. The message is easy to ignore, yet ignoring it can feel more socially expensive than reading it. The subject watched the tutorial. The portal had been redesigned since filming. The interface in the video no longer matched the interface on the portal. The button the father indicated was pointing at a blank white area where a feature used to live.

The subject replied with a voice note saying the tutorial was very helpful.
This was not accurate. This was the correct response.

A family message gains authority from repetition even when nobody can identify its original source. The tutorial was forwarded the following week to a cousin who was also navigating the portal. The cousin thanked the father for the tutorial. The cousin did not use the tutorial. The cousin used a YouTube video from 2021.
The 2021 YouTube video also showed an outdated interface. The cousin figured out the portal anyway.
V.
After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around relative video tutorial. The subject's father sent a second tutorial the following month. This one covered a banking app. The method was the same: one phone pointing at the other. The audio included a television in the next room.
The subject watched it at dinner.
The app had been updated since filming. The button had moved. The subject found the button.
The tutorial was helpful enough. This was the standard it had always been held to.
Eventually relative video tutorial acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. The father now sends tutorials preemptively, before a need is expressed. The tutorials are received. They are acknowledged. The portal gets navigated one way or another.
The pressure cooker is always audible in the background.
