The Skills Section Pruning Exception
Someone removes an old skill from a profile because keeping it now feels like admitting an outdated professional identity.

Item 1: The Skill Under Review
A software tool, version-specific, relevant approximately three years ago and now succeeded by a newer version that the person has not formally listed. The old skill appears in the top twelve. Its presence implies a currency that is not accurate.
The review was initiated when the person noticed the skill during an update to a different section and experienced a mild professional discomfort that could not be ignored without acknowledging it had been noticed.
Item 2: The Decision Process
A temporary workaround for skills section pruning became the default because it worked once. The previous pruning removed a presentation software from 2015 that had not been used since and whose presence communicated nothing useful. The removal was clean and produced no notable consequence.
The current item is more complex. Removing it implies the person can no longer use it, which is not true. Leaving it implies the person uses it regularly, which is also not true. The skill exists in a category of competence that has not been formally retired but is not actively deployed.
Item 3: The Consultation
Other people began planning around the workaround and quietly preserving it. Two colleagues were consulted informally. One said to keep it because gaps look odd. One said to remove it because the newer version signals more. Neither had a strong opinion. Both gave it more thought than warranted.
Uncertainty may be reduced only by adding a second check that creates a third question. The third question is whether to add the newer version alongside, which would require deciding whether proficiency in the newer version is sufficient to list publicly, which requires a benchmark that does not exist.
Item 4: Current Status
The old skill remains listed. A note was made to revisit this during the next profile review. The note has been on the list for six weeks. The profile review has not been scheduled.
A person using the ordinary method, which is to remove outdated skills without deliberation, now has to explain why they ignored the established review procedure. No one has asked.
