The Tea Has Entered a Second Heating Cycle

The tea was made at the right temperature. It is no longer that temperature. The person who made it is aware of this. They will reheat it in a moment.

4 MIN READfood rituals

The tea was made at 3pm with full intention.

The kettle was boiled. The bag was selected. The correct amount of time was allocated for steeping. This was not a casual cup of tea. This was a deliberate cup of tea, made by a person who wanted tea and took the steps required to have it.

By 3:40, it was cold.

The First Abandonment

The tea was not forgotten. Forgetting implies the tea left the person's awareness. The tea was present in their awareness throughout. They knew it was there. They planned to drink it. Between the making and the drinking, other things happened, each of which felt more immediate than the tea, and the tea waited.

A cup of tea has a window. The window is approximately twelve to fifteen minutes. During that window, the tea is at the correct temperature and available. Outside that window, the tea requires a decision.

The Reheating

The microwave restores temperature but not occasion. The reheated tea is correct in one sense and wrong in another. It is hot enough to drink but it is not the tea that was made at 3pm. It is a recovery operation, and the person drinking it knows this.

They drink it anyway. It is fine. It is not what was made, but it is what is available.

The Second Cycle

At 4:15, the reheated tea is discovered cold again.

The person looks at it. They consider reheating it a second time. They are aware that a tea reheated twice is no longer a tea in any meaningful sense. It is a commitment to a sunk cost. It is the liquid embodiment of not wanting to admit that the window closed an hour ago.

They reheat it anyway.

The Classification

There are three types of forgotten tea. The first is tea forgotten once, reheated successfully, consumed without comment. The second is tea forgotten twice, consumed with acknowledgment that it is now primarily a warm beverage rather than a good one. The third is tea forgotten three times, which has now become a matter of principle, and which will be consumed cold rather than wasted.

All three types taste roughly the same. None of them are as good as the tea made at 3pm would have been.
