Work Has Been Delayed Pending Surface Clearance

The desk did not need to be clean for the work. The work needed an excuse, and the desk provided one.

What Would Have Happened If the Desk Had Already Been Clean

If the desk had already been clean, the person would have needed a different reason not to start.

The desk is rarely already clean. This is fortunate.

What Would Have Happened If the Person Had Started Anyway

The work would have begun with a slightly cluttered desk. The work would have proceeded. The cluttered desk would have become irrelevant within approximately four minutes, which is the amount of time required for the task to become interesting enough to override peripheral awareness of the environment.

Instead, the desk was cleaned first.

What Actually Happened

The desk was cleaned. The cleaning took twenty-two minutes, including an interval during which a receipt from three months ago was read in full to determine whether it needed to be kept. It did not need to be kept.

During the cleaning, the person experienced the feeling of being productive. This feeling is real. It is generated by visible physical change in the environment and is chemically indistinguishable from the feeling produced by actual work.

Under the governing rule, any desk cleaning pretask that feels like preparation may temporarily substitute for beginning the actual task. It substituted.

What Happened Next

The desk was clean. The task was rescheduled into the afternoon, which now carries the expectation of a clean-desk start, which is a more demanding condition than the original unscheduled start.

The afternoon became the evening.

The desk is still clean. The task is now described as something being worked on.
