Annual Review of Camera Ready Shirt

A shirt designated for video calls has been in rotation for fourteen months and has now accumulated a performance history more detailed than most of the calls it has appeared in.

Annual Review of Camera Ready Shirt Correspondence, April 23, 2021

Dear Camera Ready Shirt,

This letter constitutes your annual review for the period March 2020 through April 2021. You have been in active service for fourteen months.

Performance Record

You have appeared in four job interviews, two performance reviews, one formal all-hands where the speaker mentioned they could see everyone, and one call where the camera was on for the first forty seconds before the subject remembered to turn it off. Your appearance in that final instance was incomplete but noted.

You have also appeared in seventeen calls described in advance as casual where the camera was nonetheless turned on, and in one call where the subject put you on and then determined the call would be audio-only and changed into a different shirt, and then the host turned on video sharing, and the camera-ready shirt had been moved to the chair.

Assessment of Core Competency

Your function is to communicate that the wearer has made a decision about their appearance. This is different from communicating that the wearer looks professional. The distinction matters because video call standards in the period under review have been calibrated to distinguish between deliberate casual and undeliberate casual, and you have consistently registered as the former.

The shirt does not know it is the camera-ready shirt. This is the shirt's primary qualification.

Areas for Improvement

You have been washed eleven times in the review period. Three of these washes occurred in immediate preparation for a scheduled call. This preparation cycle has introduced a risk of availability conflict that has so far not materialized.

One collar thread is fraying at the left edge. This has been visible in three calls since February. It has not been mentioned.

Compensation and Recognition

You receive no compensation. You are a shirt. Recognition is delivered through continued deployment into high-visibility contexts over garments that are technically equivalent by all measurable standards.

Outlook

With vaccination rollout progressing, the frequency of in-person contexts may increase. Your role will need to be reassessed. It is possible that camera-ready shirt is a pandemic-specific designation and you will transition back to general rotation without the operational significance you have accumulated over the past fourteen months.

This is not a demotion. It is a normalization. The difference is not always visible from where the shirt is hanging.

Respectfully, The Wearer
