Annual Review of Monthly Versus Annual Math

The calculation that would justify cancelling a subscription takes longer than paying would have.

REVIEW PERIOD: Rolling, assessed quarterly and then not assessed again until the charge appears SUBJECT: The monthly versus annual pricing calculation for a digital service the subscriber is uncertain about retaining

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The subscriber spent between four and eleven minutes comparing the monthly and annual pricing options for a service they have been considering cancelling for approximately four months. The calculation did not produce a cancellation. It produced a deferral.

FINDINGS: Monthly versus annual math survives one more billing cycle. This is the primary finding of this review. The calculation was initiated to determine whether the subscription was worth continuing. The calculation demonstrated that the annual plan represents a seventeen percent savings over the monthly rate. The subscriber did not select the annual plan. The subscriber also did not cancel. The current monthly plan continues.

The decision to keep the service has already been made by the time the calculator opens. This is the structural observation that explains the finding above. The calculation is framed as a decision-making tool. It functions as a justification tool. The service feels optional each day while billing treats it as permanent. On the day the calculation is performed, the subscriber is not deciding whether to keep the service. They are deciding how to think about keeping it.

The household starts planning around its continued existence. Other subscriptions are evaluated in relation to it. The budget contains a line item that is justified not by use but by a favorable comparison to the alternative plan tier.

A temporary service gains permanent budget status at the moment the math takes longer than the charge. The charge is automatic. The math is optional. The charge recurs. The math requires initiation. Under the governing rule, monthly versus annual math becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it.

RECOMMENDATION: None. This review is informational.
