Application for Trend Audio Fatigue
A sound becomes tiresome before the feed that carries it has finished finding uses for it.
This application is submitted on behalf of individuals who, during the spring and summer of 2023, became tired of a specific audio clip before the platforms distributing it had finished finding contexts in which to use it.
The subject is trend audio fatigue: the exhaustion that follows exposure to the same four seconds of audio across videos that have no relationship to each other, to the original context of the audio, or to any category of content the person selected. The sound is not attached to any single video. It is the current condition of the feed.
Trend audio fatigue extends the break by one clip. This is its central operational effect. The person encounters the sound on the third video. They continue because stopping requires a decision and making a decision requires resources that are allocated elsewhere at this moment, which is why they are on their phone. The fourth clip plays. The sound reappears.
The feed removes clear boundaries between the next clips. This is a design property of the format, not an accident of any particular session. The clip ends and the next begins. The junction is smooth. The stopping point, which would normally be produced by the end of a piece of content, does not exist because the content is technically continuous.
Each clip is easy to leave while the feed removes a natural stopping point. The individual unit is interruptible. The sequence is not. This asymmetry is how trend audio fatigue becomes a session: the person is not trapped by any single clip, but by the aggregated cost of the decision to stop, which increases with each additional clip viewed without stopping.
The break becomes a session requiring a separate act of will once the sound has become the atmosphere. Under the governing rule, trend audio fatigue becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. This application requests official recognition of the exhaustion. It does not request relief, as none is available within the current interface.
