Record: The subject was not certain what to expect. The subject had sent a message about weekend plans. The typing indicator began nine minutes after the original message was sent, which is long enough to suggest considered response and short enough to preclude forgetting.
Committee: Describe the message.
Record: The message was two letters and one punctuation mark. The punctuation mark was a period.
Context
The subject watches a parent type for a long time and receives a two-word reply. This is not an unusual experience. The parent types slowly on a phone with a small keyboard and large text size. The typing indicator does not distinguish between a person composing a 400-word message and a person finding the letters for "okay."
The message is easy to ignore, yet ignoring it can feel more socially expensive than reading it. The subject did not ignore the typing indicator. The subject watched it for four minutes.
The Governing Rule
A family message gains authority from repetition even when nobody can identify its original source. "Okay" sent after four minutes carries weight the word itself does not justify, because the four minutes of visible effort preceded it and cannot be separated from it. The subject read "okay" and felt it was a considered okay.
Consequence
After repetition, the subject stopped trying to predict message length from typing duration. This was the correct adjustment. The subject has not fully made this adjustment and continues to wait with moderate investment.
The parent types at approximately this speed for all messages. A birthday greeting and a two-letter reply take similar time to produce. The subject knows this. Watching the dots is not a rational response to this knowledge.
Finding
The hearing finds no fault with any party. The typing indicator is accurate. The message was sent. The message was received.
The four minutes cannot be recovered and were not wasted, in that the subject used them for something, which was watching the dots.
