Annual Review of Pillow Arrangement
The bed has six pillows arranged correctly each morning. By bedtime, the arrangement is whatever happened during the day.
Year in review: pillow arrangement. Period: The past year. Morning arrangements performed: approximately 340 (accounting for travel and illness). Evening arrangements performed: zero. Decorative pillows on the floor at bedtime: two, consistently.
The Morning System
The morning pillow arrangement serves the function of communicating that the bed is made. It also serves the function of placing the decorative pillows in their correct positions, which are defined as "visible and not on the floor."
The morning arrangement takes 90 seconds. It is performed as part of making the bed, which is the daily habit that contains it.
The Evening Dismantlement
The evening dismantlement is not a deliberate act. It is the consequence of using the bed:
The reading pillows are moved to allow lying down. The decorative pillows are moved because they are in the way. The flat pillows migrate during sleep.
By morning, the arrangement requires restoration. The 90 seconds is the cost of having the arrangement.
The Value of the Arrangement
The arrangement communicates order during the hours when the bed is not in use. It looks correct from the doorway and contributes to the room's appearance during the day.
The arrangement is for the daytime version of the room, observed by daytime inhabitants and occasional visitors. The nighttime inhabitants have different priorities.
The Annual Accounting
340 mornings of arrangement × 90 seconds = 8.5 hours of pillow arrangement per year.
The arrangement produced 8.5 hours of correctly arranged bed visible during waking hours.
The value assessment depends on whether 8.5 hours is reasonable for daytime room aesthetics. Both positions are defensible.
