Annual Review of Post Workout Mirror Check

The mirror is consulted immediately after exercise, as if biology respects urgency.

POST WORKOUT MIRROR CHECK: ANNUAL REVIEW Q1 through Q4 findings, consolidated for assessment

Q1 FINDINGS

The behavior was initiated within 90 seconds of the final exercise. The person is aware that skeletal muscle hypertrophy requires a minimum of several weeks of consistent stimulus to produce visible structural change. This awareness was present when the mirror check began. It remained present throughout.

The inspection occurs because something should have changed, and the mirror is the only way to confirm whether anything has. The mirror does not confirm anything has changed. The check continues.

Q2 FINDINGS

Frequency increased. Checks now occur after every session. Lighting conditions in the bathroom were identified as a variable. The overhead light was adjusted. A phone flashlight was used as a supplementary source in one documented instance.

The behavior is supposed to support consistency, yet it often turns the appearance of effort into a substitute for effort. The distinction between inspection and result is understood. The inspection continues regardless.

Q3 FINDINGS

A system of comparison emerged. The person now remembers roughly what they looked like in Q1 and compares the current view to that memory. The comparison is unreliable, as the Q1 memory has been revised over time. The memory is now more favorable to Q3 than it was when originally formed.

The mirror has not changed. The assessment of the mirror has changed. These are different things treated as the same evidence.

Q4 FINDINGS

The check now occurs before the session as well, establishing a baseline, and after the session, evaluating change. The session is approximately 45 minutes. The interval between baseline and evaluation is approximately 45 minutes. No durable physical change occurs in 45 minutes.

The check finds what the check always finds. The check happens again tomorrow.

CONSOLIDATED ASSESSMENT

People inspect muscles immediately after exercise even though they know durable change does not happen that fast. The knowledge is complete. The behavior does not require the knowledge to be absent in order to function. Both coexist.

The first accommodation for post workout mirror check looks harmless and removes a little uncertainty. Later, skipping it feels like negligence. Later still, skipping it feels like dishonesty about one's own effort.

The mirror is there. The behavior will continue.
