Incident Summary
At 10:04 AM, a twelve-person video call was in progress. The call was a quarterly planning session. The call had been in progress for four minutes. At 10:04 AM, the organizer announced that the call would be recorded and shared with team members who were not present.
This report documents what happened next.
Observed Behaviors
Within approximately two seconds of the announcement, the following behaviors were observed across participants:
Four participants adjusted their camera positioning or sat up slightly straighter. This adjustment was not significant but was measurable. The participants had been sitting adequately before the announcement.
Two participants glanced at their own video thumbnail. They appeared to assess their appearance. Both appeared to find the assessment acceptable and returned their attention to the main grid.
One participant reached off-camera. What they reached for is unknown but is likely a coffee cup, a phone, or a notebook. They retrieved the item and returned to the frame.
Three participants showed no visible change in behavior.
One participant briefly appeared to react to the announcement but it is unclear in which direction.
What the Recording Changes
For the purposes of this report, a review of the call's subsequent content reveals that the recording announcement produced no measurable change in the topics discussed, the candor of contributions, the duration of the call, or the number of action items generated.
The recording announcement produced a two-second pause followed by a return to conditions that were identical to pre-announcement conditions in every observable way except posture.
The Absurd Rule
Recording announcements are legally required or organizationally mandated in order to preserve participant awareness that a record is being created. The announcement changes the behavior of the call in the first two seconds and has no documented effect thereafter, at which point the recording is in progress and the window of behavioral adjustment has closed.
The announcement changed nothing that the announcement was designed to change, and changed several things it was not designed to change.
Post-Incident Status
The recording is complete. It is 58 minutes long and available to team members who were not present, none of whom have yet watched it. The recording will remain available for ninety days before automatic deletion.
