Field Notes on Missed Reply Followup
A message was sent twelve days ago. No reply arrived. The person has drafted a follow-up and is deciding whether it reads as desperate.

Day 3
No reply has arrived. This is within normal range. The original message was professional and non-urgent. Three days is not a signal.
The person has not considered sending a follow-up. It is too early. Nothing is being tracked.
Day 7
One week. This is outside normal range for this type of message. The message was not marked urgent but was also not marked casual. It requested a brief response and included a clear question.
The person has thought briefly about a follow-up and decided it is premature. This conclusion required about four minutes to reach and has not produced a draft.
Day 9
A follow-up has been drafted. The draft reads as follows: "Hi [Name], just following up on my message from last week. Happy to connect whenever is convenient."
The person has read the draft twice. "Just following up" has been removed and then added back. The person is assessing whether "whenever is convenient" signals appropriate flexibility or an uncomfortable degree of availability. The word "happy" has been changed to "glad" and back to "happy."
The draft has not been sent.
Day 11
The draft now reads: "Hi [Name], wanted to follow up on this in case it got buried. Let me know if now's not a good time."
"Buried" implies the recipient is overwhelmed. This may be accurate. Stating it implies awareness of their possible overwhelm, which the person is uncertain about the appropriateness of.
The original message was clear. The silence is also clear. Neither of these facts has moved the follow-up into the sent folder.
Day 12
The draft has been in the drafts folder for four days. In those four days, twelve other emails have been sent from the same application. The follow-up remains a draft.
The person has identified the problem: the follow-up risks two things simultaneously. If sent too gently, it reads as uncertain. If sent too directly, it reads as demanding. The window for a follow-up that reads as neither has been closing since Day 7.
Day 13
The follow-up has now been drafted, revised, and not sent for longer than the original silence it was meant to address.
It reads as follows: "Hi [Name], just circling back on this. No rush, but wanted to make sure it hadn't gotten lost." The person has not sent it. "Circling back" has been identified as jargon. "No rush" contradicts twelve days of waiting. "Hadn't gotten lost" implies that it might have gotten lost, which the person considers a reasonable thing to say and is therefore suspicious of.
Current Status
A reply arrived this morning. The recipient apologized for the delay, cited a busy period, and answered the original question.
The draft has not been deleted. It remains available.
