Application for Photo Resend Original
The original photo exists somewhere. What arrived is a screenshot of a screenshot. The request begins.
The photo arrived as a screenshot. This was not the photo.
The photo was a moment from a wedding or a function or a visit, and the moment had been captured by someone on a device with a working camera, and the photo itself existed somewhere in good resolution with accurate color. What arrived in the family group was a screenshot of a screenshot of a WhatsApp forward, and the compression had been applied at each stage, and by the time it arrived it was a document of a document of an original that remained unavailable.
Someone asked for the original.
This is the opening condition of the photo resend original request: the image in circulation is technically a photograph but practically a record of previous sharing, and the request for the original is also a request to trace the sharing chain backwards to its source.
The first consequence was a smaller version of the same photograph. Someone found the WhatsApp save from which the screenshot had been taken, and forwarded that. The resolution improved slightly. The problem remained.
After the second request, behavior adjusted. The person who originally took the photograph was now a named figure in the chain. Messages were directed to them specifically. They were asked to resend from their camera roll. They asked which photo. There were many photos.
A family message gains authority from repetition even when nobody can identify its original source.
The process of requesting and not receiving the original photograph creates a parallel archival process in which everyone who wants the original eventually accepts a higher-quality version of the copy. This version is saved. It is shared at a later date as though it were the original. The original continues to exist on one device, in a folder called camera or a folder called October, or possibly in a backup that would require a few minutes to locate.
Nobody has the few minutes.
The original photo was always one step further back in the chain than the current message.
By October 2022, the Diwali season had produced many photographs in many groups. Most of them arrived at reduced resolution. Most of the originals remained one step away.
The step is not large. The step is never taken.
