Someone adjusted before unmuting. The adjustment took a few seconds. It achieved approximately nothing measurable, because headset marks require time rather than intervention, but the adjustment was made and the person felt briefly prepared.

This is the opening condition of the headset hair check: the call is beginning, the appearance is imperfect in a specific and visible way, and the response to the imperfection is a brief physical action that addresses the symptom rather than the cause.

The first consequence was atmospheric. Several people on the call appeared to be settling in. Someone's background was slightly different than usual. There was a small choreography of getting ready that happened in the first thirty seconds of most calls, and the headset hair check was one element of it.

Adjusting the hair suggested something needed adjusting. Not adjusting it suggested either no camera or no concern. The correct position was somewhere between these readings, and it required careful management.

By 2022, video call etiquette was no longer improvised. It had layers and unwritten rules and a history of what had been acceptable during which phase of the previous two years. Headset hair was a minor issue in this larger structure.

It was also the last thing many people fixed before turning on the camera.
