Statement of Need
The applicant requests recognition of the Scroll Guilt Pause as a distinct behavioral category requiring its own treatment protocol. The applicant does not request cessation. The applicant requests acknowledgment that cessation was attempted.
The sequence of events is as follows. The applicant opens the application during a period identified internally as downtime. Downtime is the period between scheduled tasks when no productive activity is planned or required. The application presents video content in a continuous feed without a natural conclusion point. Each clip is approximately fifteen to sixty seconds in length. Each clip is followed by another.
The applicant, after an unspecified period, closes the application. This closure is motivated by a combination of mild guilt, awareness that time has passed, and the ambient sense that other activities exist. The closure is real. The application is no longer open.
The application reopens within three minutes.
Each clip is easy to leave while the feed removes a natural stopping point. This is not a design flaw from the platform's perspective. It is the function. The applicant is aware of this and finds the awareness insufficient.
Scroll guilt pause extends the break by one clip. The feed removes the boundary between the next clip and the one after. The break becomes a session. The session requires a separate act of will to end, which is distinct from and more effortful than the act of will required to close the application the first time.
Under the governing rule, any behavior entered for less than a minute may continue until the user notices time again. The applicant notices time approximately twenty-two minutes after the initial closure.
