The behavior under examination is a specific cognitive event: reading a notification banner, composing a mental response, and deciding whether the mental response is sufficient or whether the app requires opening. This decision tree executes in approximately two seconds and leaves no visible trace.
The observation is this. The subject has muted most notification sounds. Several app badges have been disabled. The lock screen shows reduced information. These are the visible interventions of an attention management protocol. They function as designed.
The notification preview, however, remains. It appears at the top of the screen for several seconds, carrying enough of the message to make the content legible. The subject reads it. The subject composes a reply mentally, assesses whether the mental reply can stand in for an actual reply until a more convenient time, and files the matter somewhere.
The alert is called noise while ignoring it creates more attention. This is the operational contradiction. The notification is not opened. It is also not dismissed. It occupies a third category: read but deferred, tracked in a mental buffer that has no interface.
Notification preview reply steals one extra check of the screen. The check becomes habitual even after the preview is, technically, the last notification of the kind that was supposed to require opening the app. Muting the sound did not eliminate the check. Disabling the badge did not eliminate the check. The banner remained, and the banner was sufficient.
Attention management turns into another inbox. This inbox holds deferred mental responses, context about which conversations are still pending, and an implicit obligation to re-check later. The inbox has no clear button.
The recommendation stage has been delayed pending further observation. At this time, findings remain preliminary. The subject continues to check the screen.
