Application to Retain Scheduled Order Forgetting
Whenever scheduled order forgetting feels safer than waiting, repetition must count as due diligence.
FIELD NOTES: Scheduled Order Forgetting: September 2021
Observations collected across multiple household delivery cycles. Patterns consistent.
Site: Kitchen. Time: Unspecified arrival window. Event: Doorbell before the order was remembered.
Someone forgets a scheduled grocery delivery until the arrival message appears. The order was placed four days ago. A delivery window was selected at that time. The window was in the calendar. The calendar was consulted twice since the window was set. The delivery was not mentioned in either consultation.
Field Note 1: Initial Stage
Scheduled order forgetting begins as a private precaution with no audience. The order is placed and then released from attention because tracking a placed order is considered unnecessary work. This is correct. Tracking is unnecessary. The forgetting is the feature. The problem emerges when the delivery window coincides with a period of household activity that the order would have reorganized, had it been remembered.
Field Note 2: Visibility
It becomes visible enough that other people adjust their timing or expectations around it. A household member who was planning to cook dinner now does not need to cook dinner. This adjustment would have been useful four hours earlier. The adjustment is made at the door. The delivery saves a trip, but the order creates a second layer of monitoring and inventory work. The forgetting converted monitoring work into arrival-door work.
Field Note 3: Social Rule
The precaution turns into a social rule whose absence is noticed faster than its presence. A household member who does not receive a delivery surprise is not considered to have successfully remembered the order. Remembering the order in advance is not the expected behavior. The expected behavior is a mild surprise followed by a rapid reassessment of dinner, which is now resolved.
Absurd Rule in Force
Familiarity acquires authority once a workaround has been repeated in public. Scheduled order forgetting has been performed in front of witnesses enough times that the arrival message is now considered a household event. It is read aloud. Several people stop what they are doing. The delivery is collected with more ceremony than a remembered delivery would receive.
Contradiction
The scheduled delivery exists to reduce the cognitive load of grocery planning. The forgetting is a successful outcome of this load reduction. The ceremony upon arrival is a new cognitive event that did not exist before the load was reduced. No net reduction has been recorded.
Field Assessment
The pattern is stable and shows no sign of correction. Documentation continues.
