CLASSIFICATION NOTICE RE: The call ending loop TYPE: Sequential conclusion with content interruption

Description

The call ending loop occurs when a phone call reaches what both parties identify as a natural conclusion point, initiates the ending sequence, and then receives new content from one party that extends the call beyond the ending sequence.

The loop can repeat multiple times. Each iteration of the ending sequence is sincere: both parties intend to end the call. The new content is also sincere: the item raised is genuinely relevant. The combination produces calls that end later than anticipated by any specific ending attempt.

The Ending Sequence

A standard call ending sequence involves:

  1. Summary phrase ("Okay, so I'll do that").
  2. Leave-taking phrase ("Okay, I'll let you go" or "Okay, speak soon").
  3. Counter leave-taking phrase ("Yeah, bye" or "Okay, take care").
  4. Acknowledgment sounds (mm, okay, etc.).
  5. Silence that indicates mutual readiness to disconnect.

The loop is triggered when step 4 or 5 is interrupted by a new topic.

The New Topic Phenomenon

New topics arise during ending sequences because the approaching end of the call creates a brief period of heightened awareness of what has not been said. Items that were deprioritized during the call's main content become visible when the call is about to conclude and may not be able to be held until the next call.

The items are genuine. They could also have been mentioned during the call's main content. They were not. They surface at the end.

The Resolution

The loop ends when both parties reach the ending sequence simultaneously without interruption. This requires both parties to have no remaining items. The simultaneous empty state typically occurs on the second or third ending attempt.
