Classification Notice for Extension Board Empire

Classification Level: Behavioral — Home Infrastructure Subject: Extension Board, Wall Unit Beside the Work Desk Status: Operational Capital of the Room's Electrical System

What Is Being Classified

Extension Board Empire refers to the condition in which one electrical extension board becomes the central hub of a room's power distribution, despite the presence of other, closer, equally accessible wall outlets.

The phenomenon does not arise from a shortage of outlets. It arises from a preference for proximity, convenience, and the accumulated logic of devices that have always been plugged into this particular board and therefore continue to be.

Inventory of Current Connections

The extension board has six ports. Six are occupied.

  • Laptop charger
  • Phone charger (main)
  • Phone charger (backup, technically redundant)
  • Desk lamp
  • Portable speaker
  • A charger for a device the user no longer owns but the cable "might be useful"

The wall outlet across the room has been unoccupied since the lamp was moved three months ago. The lamp was moved because the extension board was more convenient. The wall outlet is now used for nothing. It is, in practical terms, not part of the room's electrical infrastructure.

The Workaround

Guests who arrive and attempt to charge their devices at the wall outlet are gently redirected to the extension board. The redirection feels natural to the resident. The outlet feels wrong.

This feeling has no technical basis. The outlet provides identical power at identical voltage. The feeling is based on proximity, cable reach, and the territorial logic that the extension board is where things happen in this room.

Residents have begun teaching the workaround to each other. The newest resident learned on day two that the desk outlet is the right outlet.

Risk Assessment

The extension board currently draws more load than a single outlet was designed to sustain over extended periods.

This has been mentioned. This has been noted.

The extension board is not being rearranged.

The extension board is the electrical capital city of this room. Normal outlet use now looks like not knowing how the place works.
