The plan is to get coffee. There is also a contingency in case the coffee place is closed.

The Office Observes Plan Backup Plan

I.

The plan was to meet at the café on the corner. The café has been open every day for four years without interruption. The café is open today. This is not in doubt.

The backup plan is to go to the other café, two streets away, in case the corner café is closed.

II.

The backup plan was introduced in 2024, after an incident in which two people arrived at a restaurant that was closed for a private function. The incident lasted approximately four minutes — the time between arrival and finding an alternative — and created a level of logistical stress that neither party wanted to repeat.

The backup plan has been included in every outing since then.

The restaurant was never closed again.

III.

Observational note: the backup plan is not primarily about contingency management. It is about the feeling of having discussed contingency management.

The backup plan is exchanged at the planning stage of the outing. Once exchanged, neither party thinks about it again. If the primary plan is available — which it always is — the backup plan does not activate. The backup plan exists to exist.

It provides a mutual reassurance: we are the kind of people who have planned for this. The planning was done. Everyone can relax.

IV.

A third person joined the group recently and was confused about why the corner café arrangement included a secondary café. The corner café was not at risk. Everyone knew this.

The third person did not understand that the backup plan is not about the café.

The third person now includes a backup option in their own outing proposals. They do not know exactly why. It felt like the right thing to add.

V.

The backup plan has now been passed to someone who did not experience the restaurant incident. The behavior survived its origin. The behavior is policy.

Both original parties now protect each other from an awkwardness they created. The protection is expressed in the form of a second café nobody needs.

This is fine.
