CLASSIFICATION NOTICE Subject: Free Shipping Threshold Behavior Issuing Body: The Registry of Acceptable Financial Reasoning Effective Date: January 6, 2024

What Is Being Classified

The Free Shipping Threshold (hereafter: the Threshold) refers to the documented behavior in which a person, faced with a delivery fee, adds one or more items to an order specifically to reach the minimum purchase amount that eliminates the fee.

The items added may cost more than the delivery fee. This does not discourage the behavior.

Why It Is Being Classified

Under the governing rule, correcting free shipping threshold requires more authority than repeating it. No authority capable of correcting it has been identified.

The Threshold has been active long enough to function as standard consumer procedure. It appears in household budgets under "groceries," "essentials," and occasionally "miscellaneous." It does not appear under its own category because it has never been named in the family ledger.

Mechanism

The behavior is supposed to create financial control. It does this by eliminating a line-item fee. The elimination is real. The fee does not appear on the receipt.

What also does not appear on the receipt: the cost difference between the delivery fee avoided and the item purchased to avoid it. This difference is occasionally in the item's favor. More often it is not. Nobody audits this. The receipts are available. Nobody audits this.

The Threshold quietly moves the boundary of what counts as reasonable. A 79-rupee shipping charge is unreasonable. A 299-rupee item that lifts the cart to free shipping is economical.

Escalation Pattern

Someone makes one minor adjustment for free shipping threshold. They add a bottle of shampoo. The shampoo is not needed. It will be used.

The adjustment becomes part of the expected sequence. Future orders are now mentally structured with a threshold gap in mind before items are selected. The person is no longer shopping. They are building toward a target.

Eventually removing the adjustment requires a discussion longer than the behavior ever saved.

Current Status

The Threshold is now operational across a majority of e-commerce interactions. It is recognized across generations. It is transmitted without instruction.

The behavior has been classified as: functioning as intended.

Classification is final. No appeal window has been established.
