Classification Notice for Fridge Shelf Ownership
The top shelf has become one person's shelf. The middle shelf belongs to another. This was never discussed. It has been this way for seven months.
CLASSIFICATION NOTICE RE: Refrigerator shelf allocation in a shared household EFFECTIVE: Seven months into the current occupancy
The Allocation
Top shelf: occupied primarily by Resident A. Items present: yogurt, leftovers in containers (resident A's), a drink type favored by Resident A, and two items of contested origin.
Second shelf: occupied primarily by Resident B. Items present: meal prep containers, dairy products, a bottle of something medicinal that has been there longer than the current allocation system.
Third shelf: shared, primarily large items that neither resident specifically claims. Arrangement fluid.
Vegetable drawer: theoretically shared. Currently contains: two vegetables belonging to Resident A, one forgotten item of indeterminate ownership, and a half-empty condiment that belongs to neither party but was transferred from a previous shared surface.
Door compartments: highest-conflict zone. Items from both residents coexist in a configuration that neither would design from scratch.
How This Happened
No meeting was held. No assignment was made. The allocation developed through approximately forty interactions in which each resident placed items in the refrigerator and, through accumulated decisions, established a gravitational center for their items.
Once established, the center became convention. New items placed near the established center reinforce it. Items placed elsewhere create mild friction that is immediately resolved by wordlessly moving the item.
The Status
The allocation is stable and functional. Both residents can locate their items quickly. Cross-shelf placement occurs occasionally and is resolved without discussion.
No renegotiation is anticipated. The arrangement will persist until the household composition changes.
