The Mechanism
The doorway pile is a reminder system. Items are placed near the exit to create a visual trigger: when leaving, see these things, take them. The system is effective in theory. In practice, the trigger fires every morning and every evening but rarely produces the action, because the action requires the specific trip rather than any trip.
The library book requires a trip in the direction of the library. The broken charger requires a trip past an electronics recycling point. The bag for a friend requires a trip to the friend. Each trip has a direction. Most trips go in different directions.
The pile is direction-specific items waiting for matching trips.
The Growth
The pile grows because the placement logic is correct: near the door, ready to go. The placement does not require an immediate trip. It requires a future trip. The future trip is coming. The item waits.
After eleven days, the pile contains: the library book, the broken charger, the bag for a friend, a form that needs physical posting, and a scarf borrowed two months ago that was recently found.
All five items are ready to leave. None require the same trip.
The Resolution
The library book went back on Wednesday when a walk in that direction was taken. The charger went the following week. The friend received the bag on a visit. The form was posted from the nearest postbox once it was noticed on a corner.
The scarf is still near the door. The friend is coming over eventually.
