CLASSIFICATION NOTICE Subject: Hybrid Calendar Decoding Effective Date: February 22, 2023 Prior Classification: Optional Reconnaissance New Classification: Standard Pre-Commute Procedure

Basis for Reclassification

Hybrid calendar decoding has been observed occurring across the majority of cases where a commute is pending but not yet confirmed. The behavior is as follows: before deciding whether to travel to the office, the subject opens the shared calendar interface and reads the attendance signals of between three and seven coworkers. Attendance signals include: explicit in-office calendar blocks, absence of WFH indicators, location metadata on meeting entries, and prior patterns interpreted as predictive.

This activity is not on any task list. It is not scheduled. It takes eight to fifteen minutes and must be repeated if circumstances change between the morning reading and the commute departure window.

The day is called flexible. It requires extra location planning.

Under the prior classification, hybrid calendar decoding was understood as one of several inputs a worker might choose to consult before committing to a commute. Under the new classification, it is a step that occurs before every commute where the social return is uncertain, which is most of them.

Hybrid calendar decoding adds one coordination step to the day. Coworkers, aware that others are performing similar reads, begin posting informal attendance declarations earlier in the week to reduce the uncertainty they are simultaneously producing. These declarations are read, incorporated, and used to refine the next round of calendar reads.

Flexibility hardens into an unwritten schedule. By Wednesday, Thursday attendance is mostly settled, not because anyone set a policy, but because the calendar reads converged on a shared expectation. The flexible workday produced a fixed social commitment through the mechanisms installed to navigate its flexibility.

This reclassification is administrative. No new behavior is required. The activity has been reclassified to reflect what it already is.
