Museum label order has been classified as an active informal procedure. This classification takes effect retroactively, as the procedure was already active prior to this notice.
The behavior is defined as follows: visitors read exhibit labels in sequence even when the room layout makes the intended sequence unclear. The sequence is inferred. The inferred sequence is followed. Deviation from the inferred sequence is treated as a violation of a rule that was itself inferred.
BASIS FOR CLASSIFICATION
The first accommodation for museum label order looks harmless and removes a little uncertainty. A visitor enters a gallery. Multiple labels are present. One label is nearest. The visitor reads it first. A sequence begins.
The accommodation becomes teachable, so newcomers learn it without anyone calling it a rule. A second visitor enters behind the first and reads the same label first. This is not coordination. This is convergence. The convergence produces a procedure.
ENFORCEMENT MECHANISM
The shared space has no formal rule for this moment, yet strangers behave as if violating the pattern would be visible. Strangers are correct. It is visible. No one will say anything. The violation will register as a small social event with no recorded outcome.
