Hearing Concerning Guest Mug Ranking

HEARING TRANSCRIPT Matter: Guest Mug Ranking , Status and Governance Parties: CHAIR (the Panel), WITNESS (the subject)
CHAIR: Please describe the current mug situation.
WITNESS: There are eight mugs. Six are available. Two are not.
CHAIR: What do you mean, "not available"?
WITNESS: They are available in the sense that they are accessible. They are not available in the sense that they are not for everyday use.
CHAIR: Who determined that?
WITNESS: Nobody determined it. It was recognized.
CHAIR: Walk us through the recognition process.
WITNESS: One mug was received as a gift. It was nice. It felt wrong to use it for morning coffee when morning coffee was still a somewhat rough experience. I used a different mug. The gift mug remained. Visitors came. I used the gift mug for visitors. This created a category.
CHAIR: And the second mug?
WITNESS: The second one was added later by the same logic. It also seemed like a guest mug. I recognized it as a guest mug. It joined the category.
CHAIR: How many guests have used these mugs?
WITNESS: Three. Possibly four.
CHAIR: The mugs were acquired approximately when?
WITNESS: Four years ago.
CHAIR: So the mugs have been available for four years, used by three or four visitors, and are otherwise not touched?
WITNESS: Correct.
CHAIR: And if you were to use them yourself?
WITNESS: That would be wrong.
CHAIR: Can you define "wrong"?
WITNESS: Guest mug ranking creates a small sense of control. The sense of control becomes something people check for before they trust the ordinary process. Using the guest mug for non-guest purposes would violate the check.
CHAIR: Is there anything else you would like the panel to consider?
WITNESS: By the end, losing the ritual feels more alarming than the original problem it was meant to solve. The original problem was: what do I offer a guest.
