Classification Notice for Plan Confirmation Silence

The plan was made two weeks ago. Tomorrow is the day. Nobody has confirmed that the plan is still happening. Everyone is waiting for someone else to ask first.

CLASSIFICATION NOTICE RE: Pre-event confirmation silence TYPE: Collective deference pending explicit inquiry

Description

Plan confirmation silence occurs in the period between a plan being made and the plan's scheduled occurrence, when the plan's status is uncertain but nobody wants to be the first to make it certain by asking.

The Mechanism

Two forces operate simultaneously:

Force A: The plan needs to be confirmed because nobody has confirmed it and the event is tomorrow.

Force B: Sending the confirmation message requires acknowledging that the plan was unconfirmed, which could be read as expressing doubt about whether others still want to come, which could make the sender seem like they are looking for an exit, which nobody wants to seem like.

The result is a standoff. Everyone is waiting for someone else to trigger the confirmation.

The Resolution Mechanism

The silence resolves when one of the following occurs:

  • The event is close enough that the cost of not confirming exceeds the social risk of asking.
  • One person, less concerned with the social reading of the question, sends "still on for tomorrow?"
  • Logistics intervene: someone needs to know the address, or the time has become ambiguous.
  • The plan fails silently, which is the alternative outcome when the confirmation never arrives.

The Confirmed Outcome

In most documented cases, the confirmation arrives on the day before the event. The responses are immediate and positive. The event occurs.

The mutual waiting was unnecessary. Everyone wanted to go. Nobody wanted to say so first. The plan was confirmed because someone eventually said so first.
