Classification Notice for Shared Armrest
Two strangers are sharing a narrow armrest. Neither has acknowledged this. The negotiation has been ongoing for twenty minutes through tiny position adjustments.

The Physical Constraint
The armrest is a shared surface approximately 7cm in width. The elbow resting area for a typical adult is 9-12cm. Full occupation of the armrest by one person leaves no space for the other. Shared occupation requires both parties to accept reduced comfort.
The Negotiation Protocol
The armrest negotiation is conducted entirely through position adjustments. Neither party speaks. Neither party makes eye contact. Both parties are aware of the other's presence and the shared resource.
The protocol:
Phase 1: One party occupies the armrest. The other party does not. Phase 2: The second party arrives or shifts toward the armrest. Proximity signals intent. Phase 3: First party detects proximity and adjusts inward, opening approximately half the armrest. Phase 4: Second party occupies the opened space. Phase 5: Both parties achieve a stable configuration.
The Stability
The stable configuration is maintained through small adjustments whenever either party moves for an unrelated reason. These adjustments are made automatically and are not read as signals of dissatisfaction.
The Absence of Verbalization
Verbalizing the armrest negotiation would require one party to draw explicit attention to a shared constraint that both parties are managing without explicit attention. The explicit attention would make both parties aware of a situation they are already managing successfully.
Silence preserves the fiction that neither party is consciously negotiating while allowing both to negotiate. The fiction is the negotiation's infrastructure.
The Resolution
Both elbows rest. Both are slightly cold where the edge of the armrest cuts into the arm. Neither party raises the issue.
