The following is an edited transcript of proceedings before the Internal Notification Review Panel.
CHAIRPERSON: Can you walk us through the initial decision to enable Do Not Disturb?
SUBJECT: Yes. I was feeling overwhelmed. I wanted fewer interruptions.
CHAIRPERSON: And you enabled Do Not Disturb on your phone.
SUBJECT: I did.
CHAIRPERSON: When did you begin adding exceptions?
SUBJECT: Almost immediately. My mother is listed as an exception. My partner. My manager, in case of emergencies. Two colleagues who contact me rarely but importantly.
CHAIRPERSON: That's five exceptions.
SUBJECT: There are seven. I also added a school number and a medical contact.
CHAIRPERSON: So your Do Not Disturb setting allows through your mother, your partner, your manager, two colleagues, a school number, and a medical contact. Who does it block?
SUBJECT: Other callers.
CHAIRPERSON: Such as.
SUBJECT: People I don't know. Automated calls. People I know less well.
CHAIRPERSON: When was the last time an unknown caller interrupted you?
SUBJECT: [pause] They don't tend to call. They text.
CHAIRPERSON: Does Do Not Disturb block texts from unknown numbers?
SUBJECT: I receive those in the morning.
CHAIRPERSON: As a batch.
SUBJECT: Yes.
CHAIRPERSON: So the setting filters a category of contact that was not interrupting you, while passing through the contacts who most frequently interrupt you.
SUBJECT: They're important contacts.
CHAIRPERSON: Of course. The panel has no further questions.
