Having ordered the safer option after considerable encouragement, the requester has now asked to taste the riskier one.

Scenario A: The Order That Did Not Occur
The menu was reviewed. The pasta was identified as the preferred option. It was described, in the moment of decision, as "too heavy for tonight."
The safer option was chosen. A salad with grilled chicken.
The pasta was ordered by the other person.
Scenario A, continued: If the requester had ordered the pasta, the meal would have proceeded as follows: pasta placed in front of requester. Pasta eaten by requester. No food taste request issued. No taste portion provided. No slight awkwardness at the midpoint of the meal. The requester would have paid for the pasta and eaten it without further social architecture.
This did not happen.
Under the governing rule, a social inconvenience may continue indefinitely if ending it would require naming the inconvenience.
Scenario B: What Actually Occurred
The salad arrived. The pasta arrived. The salad was examined. A fork was lifted.
"Can I taste yours?"
The pasta owner weighed their options. The pasta had arrived thirty seconds ago. They had not yet tasted it themselves. The correct response was either yes or no. Both responses are socially legible. Only one was available.
"Of course."
A portion was indicated.
Both people focused on their own food for a moment. The taste portion was consumed. It was acknowledged to be good. Both parties understood that the requester had wanted the pasta, that the pasta owner had known this, and that neither of these facts would be named.
What Would Have Happened If:
Both people ordered what they wanted. Two dishes arrived. Both were eaten. The meal ended efficiently.
The food taste request would have had no origin. It requires the architecture of the other scenario: the visible regret, the safer choice, the friend eating the pasta across the table.
The salad was finished. It was described, afterward, as "actually really good."
The pasta owner nodded.
