Notice of Continued Phantom Vibration Check Operations

The phone felt a sensation it did not produce and was checked four times before the subject accepted that nothing had arrived.

TO: The person who checks a pocket after feeling a vibration that did not happen FROM: Documentation Services, Bureau of Pocket Verification RE: Your most recent incident

This correspondence is being issued to acknowledge the four phantom vibration checks you performed between 2:15 and 2:41 PM on Thursday.

We understand that each felt real. We are not disputing this. The sensation of a phone vibrating in a pocket is among the most specific physical perceptions available to a human being in the twenty-first century. It has texture. It has duration. It has, in most cases, a plausible source: someone wants to reach you. Something happened. The world is in motion and you are part of it.

In the cases documented above, none of this was true.

The pocket did not vibrate. The pocket has never vibrated. The pocket is fabric. The confidence with which the pocket was consulted is, nonetheless, well documented.

Under the governing rule, any phantom vibration check performed twice must be repeated until the phone provides emotional certainty.

At 2:15 PM, you reached into your pocket and checked the phone. No notifications. The lock screen was blank.

At 2:23 PM, you reached into your pocket and checked the phone. No notifications.

At 2:34 PM, you reached into your pocket. This time you did not remove the phone, but simply felt for its presence, as though confirming it existed.

At 2:41 PM, you removed the phone, woke the screen, looked at it, and placed it on the desk in front of you where you could see it.

There was a notification at 3:07 PM. It was from an app you last opened in November. You did not check the phone at the moment the notification arrived.

The ritual is documented. The check is recorded. The threshold moves, as it always does, toward wherever certainty is not currently located.

We have no action to recommend.

Yours formally, Documentation Services
