Classification of Portfolio Refresh Loop

An essay in three parts examining the compulsive re-checking of a number that the subject has already agreed not to act on.

I.

January 2022 was a month of still-bullish crypto talk at dinners and in group chats, before the winter that would later name the season. The subject holds a portfolio. The portfolio has a value. The value has not changed in the twelve minutes since the last check.

The check occurs anyway.

This is the portfolio refresh loop: the act of consulting a number the subject has already seen, under conditions that cannot produce new information, for reasons that are clearer in retrospect than in the moment.

The first case of portfolio refresh loop changes one small decision without being discussed. The subject checks. The price is the same. The subject continues with their day. No record is kept.

II.

The check cannot change the price, yet it changes the person's mood as if an action occurred. This is the operational core. Checking is not passive. It produces a state. Prices up produces a state. Prices down produces a different state. Prices flat produces a third state, which is roughly: something is about to happen and I need to be available to witness it.

The logic, if examined, is: uncertainty may be converted into certainty by checking the same number again under identical conditions. This logic does not hold. Examining it does not prevent the check from happening. Behavior and logic coexist without requiring agreement.

After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around portfolio refresh loop. Partners and colleagues notice the phone being picked up at a rate inconsistent with its stated purpose. Dinners acquire a brief pause between courses where someone confirms that conditions remain unchanged. The pause is quick. Nobody names it.

III.

Eventually portfolio refresh loop acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. The shift from crypto confidence to the months that followed gave this habit a specific emotional arc in 2022: the same checking behavior that felt like informed monitoring in January felt like something else by autumn. The subject does not discuss this shift.

The portfolio refresh loop contains no mechanism for its own termination. The number is still there. The phone is still on the table. The next check is already in process.
