What Would Have Happened If the Toilet Roll Had Been Replaced at a Normal Point
The question is hypothetical. The toilet roll was not replaced at a normal point. This document examines the counterfactual.
If the toilet roll had been replaced when two-thirds empty:
The new roll would have been installed without ceremony. The outgoing roll, still holding perhaps forty sheets, might have been set aside as a backup. Or discarded. A decision would have been made and executed.
The reserve would not exist.
What actually happened:
The toilet roll was replaced when the current one reached a medically concerning diameter. This is the diameter at which the cardboard core is visible, and the remaining paper is approximately three sheets deep , enough to constitute a quantity, but not enough to constitute a quantity one would plan around.
The new roll was placed on the holder. The remnant was placed beside the holder, on the ledge that was previously decorative.
Once a toilet roll reserve acquires a daily workaround, the workaround becomes the official storage system.
Subsequent developments:
The ledge, previously decorative, gained a preferred location. Nobody remembers choosing it. Adjacent objects were reorganized around it. A spray bottle moved two inches left. A small plant moved to the windowsill. Both movements were permanent.
There are now two toilet rolls in the bathroom at all times. One is operational. One is on the ledge, which is no longer decorative.
The future cleanup:
A future cleanup will address the ledge. The person initiating the cleanup will suggest removing the reserve roll from the ledge and storing it properly. The other person will note that the ledge is actually convenient. A third person, visiting, will ask why there are two rolls.
Nobody will have an answer that satisfies everyone.
The reserve will remain on the ledge. The ledge will remain in use. The cleanup will be declared complete without resolving this question.
The toilet roll reserve is treated as too useful to remove and too inconvenient to organize properly.
