Correspondence on Produce Damage Evidence
Produce damage evidence accumulates in the refrigerator until the volume of evidence exceeds the willingness to process it in a single session.
SUBJECT: Forensic Analysis of Produce Damage Evidence: Case File Q2-2021
Exhibit A: One bunch of cilantro, purchased with a specific recipe in mind. The recipe was not made. The cilantro is now the color of the recipe's memory.
Exhibit B: Three stalks of celery, purchased as part of a meal planning intention. The meal planning intention was real at the time of purchase. It did not survive contact with the actual week.
Exhibit C: One lemon, purchased because there was no lemon and there is often a need for a lemon. There was no need for a lemon this week.
Forensic Reconstruction
The produce was purchased with intent. The intent did not survive the week. The analysis cannot assign blame to a single failure point because the failure was distributed across several decision moments, each of which appeared reasonable in isolation.
On Sunday, the cilantro was not used because the protein thawed incorrectly. On Monday, the protein was used in a different preparation that did not require cilantro. On Tuesday, the cilantro was noted as still present and was incorporated into the week's planning as a pending item. On Wednesday through Friday, the cilantro was not the first choice because it required washing and the timing was wrong.
The item in question was not forgotten. It was deprioritized repeatedly until deprioritization and forgetting became operationally identical.
Three Contributing Factors
First: produce is purchased at a moment of higher intention than the moments of preparation that follow. The gap between purchase intention and preparation reality is consistent across subjects and across weeks and has not been closed by planning systems, apps, or the presence of a visible produce drawer.
Second: the refrigerator's vegetable drawer reduces visibility. Out of sight does not cause the forgetting but it assists the deprioritization. Items purchased and placed on the main shelf survive longer, which is evidence for this theory that the vegetable drawer's original designers presumably did not intend to provide.
Third: the cost of the wasted produce is real but small enough that it does not trigger a revision of the purchasing behavior. The revision threshold has not been crossed. It was not crossed last week either.
Finding
The evidence is noted. The produce will be purchased again next week with the same intentions operating under the same conditions. This finding has been available since at least the previous quarter.
