Procedure for Rumor Correction Fatigue
Rumor correction fatigue sets in at the point where the cost of correcting a piece of false information exceeds the social cost of allowing it to persist in one more conversation.

Context: A piece of false information has been in circulation long enough that it now exists independently of anyone's active effort to spread it. It surfaces occasionally. Correcting it each time is possible. The question before the meeting is whether it remains worthwhile.
Item 1: The Trajectory of Correction Effort
The meeting reviewed the correction record. Early in the rumor's lifecycle, the correction was offered readily and was received with appreciation. The person receiving the correction was grateful to have accurate information and said so. The correction felt proportionate to the error.
Later in the lifecycle, the correction is offered to people who have already heard the rumor from multiple sources and have partially incorporated it into their understanding of the situation. Correcting it requires not just providing new information but displacing existing information, which is a more demanding task that the correction is not designed to perform.
The person who corrects the rumor for the seventh time is not more effective than the person who corrected it the first time. The rumor is still present. Only the corrector's energy has changed.
Item 2: The Measured Alarm
The meeting registered measured alarm at the rate at which rumor correction fatigue produces silence, and the rate at which silence is later interpreted as confirmation. This is the mechanism that concerns the meeting. Not the correction fatigue itself, which is understandable, but the downstream effect where the absence of ongoing correction is received as evidence for the rumor.
The correction was accurate. It was not requested. The absence of an ongoing unrequested correction does not change the accuracy of the original correction, but the social interpretation of absence is not constrained by logic.
Item 3: No Clean Resolution
The meeting found no clean resolution. The available options are: continue correcting at a rate that produces fatigue; correct selectively, which requires maintaining a threshold that is arbitrary; or stop correcting entirely, which has the downstream effect described in Item 2.
Each option has costs. The meeting recommends awareness of the mechanism rather than a specific procedure, because a specific procedure would require more energy than the mechanism it addresses.
