Correspondence Regarding Plan Headcount Drift
A probabilistic RSVP transfers numerical uncertainty from the sender to the organizer by design.
To: The Organizer From: A Participant Subject: Attendance Confirmation, Qualified
I am writing to confirm that I am probably coming. The probability is high. I would estimate it at somewhere between likely and almost certain, which is a range that I understand you will now need to convert into a number of seats, a reservation size, a food order, or some other concrete quantity I am not positioned to provide at this time.
I recognize this places a burden on you. I want to acknowledge that burden without reducing it.

Thank you for your probably. I have placed it next to the other probablies I have collected, which currently total four. I am attempting to determine how many seats four probablies represents.
My current method is to assume each probably is worth 0.7 of a person. This gives me 2.8 people. I am booking for three. If all four probablies become certainties, one person will not have a seat. I have decided this is an acceptable risk. The person without a seat will understand, because they are also a probably.
I have created a secondary check to confirm that my calculation is correct. The secondary check has not yet confirmed anything, but it has identified two additional ambiguities I had not previously recorded.

I appreciate the transparency regarding your methodology. I want to clarify that my probably was issued in good faith and represents genuine intention under current conditions.
Current conditions may change. In the event of change, I will issue a revised probably with a lower confidence interval. I do not anticipate issuing a no. A no would require certainty about a future state that I do not yet have. This is why I issued a probably.
The group has enough information to act. Social caution has converted that information into shared ambiguity. This is not a failure. It is the expected output of a system in which no one may correct plan headcount drift unless they are willing to own the replacement procedure.
No one is willing to own the replacement procedure.
I look forward to probably seeing you.
